I am a car and motorcycle enthusiast. I am regularly found up the west coast of Scotland, enjoying the roads and soaking in the beauty of the country we live in. In recent years I have toured around New Zealand and Europe. The sense of joy and freedom that having a driving license provides me gives me the passion to ensure everyone can enjoy experiences like these. I trained to be an independent driving instructor and offer driving lessons in Edinburgh.
With all my experience on the roads, having spent most of my working and leisure time out there, there is very little that I haven't seen before. Nothing is more important to me than ensuring everyone is able to enjoy this freedom safely and confidently. The roads can be a really daunting place at times, but with my instruction, you will be equipped to (a) keep yourself out of these situations as far as possible, and (b) if you do land in a tough spot, have the confidence to navigate and manage these situations safely.
Our driving lessons are tailored to each individual and will move at an appropriate pace to ensure consistent progress and challenge. Get in touch now to discuss your driving lessons today!
Please reach us at if you cannot find an answer to your question.
How long is a piece of string!
Each individual is different and there is no answer to when an individual pupil will be ready, and crucially, safe on the roads. Factors like how consistently you attend lessons, and how much practise with parents/friends have significant influence on the number of lessons required with an instructor.
For your first lesson, we will do a couple of checks - provisional licence, eyesight. From there I will drive us to a quiet, open location. We will chat through the controls of the car. The general goal for lesson one is to get you driving - pulling away and stopping in a controlled manner. This clutch control is fundamental to many of the skills we'll need when on the road.
For subsequent early lessons, I will drive us to a suitable location to achieve the lessons goals. The aim is always to get you in the driver's seat as much as possible. We will learn new skills and techniques, taking breaks at a safe place to talk through things, reflect and feedback before getting back to practising again.
As you develop in experience and ability, the goal will be for you to be in the driver's seat for the full lesson, driving to and from your pick up location and test areas yourself.
Please let me know as far in advance, at a minimum 48 hrs in advance of the start of your lesson if you need to cancel. Cancellation within 48 hrs will be charged at full rate with payment due before the start of your next lesson.
Ideally yes! Practise makes perfect.
If you are not able to get out do not worry! I have many pupils who for various reasons cannot get out between lessons with me, and I ensure you are still able make good progress each lesson.
If you are going to go out with a family member or friend, make sure they are not providing contradictory advice to your instructor. The driving test may have significantly changed and different standards for what is seen as a "pass" may now be in place. You don't want to pick up bad habits that need to be unlearned to pass your test!
There are some requirements:
Check the government website for a full list of requirements: https://www.gov.uk/driving-lessons-learning-to-drive/practising-with-family-or-friendsd an answer to this item.
Arnold Clark have a fleet of dual control cars that can be hired on an hourly basis if your family / friend does not want you to be practising in their own car!
When you are capable of safely and confidently navigating the roads with no prompts from me (other than which direction), that's when you're ready to sit your test.
If you think you are ready, let me know and we can do a mock test!
